Australian Education System

Why Australia?

Australia’s education system, originally influenced by the British model, has evolved into a globally recognised framework supported by strong federal and state government regulation. This national structure ensures consistent quality, robust academic standards, and reliable student protection across all institutions. The title “university” is legally protected in Australia. Institutions must pass stringent assessments of their academic performance, governance, financial stability, and research capability before being formally approved by Parliament or State legislatures. Once granted university status, they can autonomously design and accredit their own programs. All courses available to international students must also be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) to ensure transparency, compliance, and high-quality provision. Australian qualifications are internationally respected. It's largely public, research-driven universities consistently rank among the world’s best and have produced Nobel Prize winners, industry innovators, and globally recognised leaders. Graduates build successful careers not only in Australia but across Asia, Europe, North America, and other regions. With integrated and flexible pathways including English preparation, vocational training, and university degrees Australia provides students with world-class academic opportunities in a safe, diverse, and welcoming environment. Whether students are seeking global career mobility or personal development, an Australian qualification offers a strong foundation for success worldwide.

Three main sectors in the Australian Education System:

  • School Sector:
  • Primary - Secondary Schools: Kindergarten to Year 12

  • Vocational Education Sector:
  • TAFE - Colleges: Certificate III to Advance Diploma

  • Higher Education Sector:
  • Universities: Bachelor to PhD

AQF Level

What is the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)?
The AQF is the national policy for regulated qualifications in Australian education and training. Delivered through the Australian Government Department of Education in consultation with the states and territories, it incorporates the qualifications from each education and training sector (schools, vocational and higher education) into a single comprehensive national qualifications framework.
One of the key objectives of the AQF is to facilitate pathways to, and through, formal qualifications. It also complements national regulatory and quality assurance arrangements for education and training.
The AQF is split into 10 levels, ranging from certificate 1, all the way through to Doctoral degree, with higher education awards including levels 5-10. For more information on the individual AQF levels, visit the AQF’s levels webpage.
